Ghana Launches ‘One Million Coders’ Initiative to Empower Youth with Digital Skills

On April 16, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama officially launched the ‘One Million Coders’ initiative in Accra. This ambitious program aims to train one million Ghanaians in essential digital skills over the next four years, positioning the nation at the forefront of the global digital economy.

“To the youth of Ghana, I say this programme is for you. Take it and own it,” President Mahama declared during the launch. “Let this be your launchpad into innovation, entrepreneurship, and global relevance.”

Key Features of the Initiative:

  • Comprehensive Training: Participants will receive instruction in coding, cybersecurity, data analytics, and network support, among other areas.moc.gov.gh

  • Inclusive Approach: The program emphasizes gender balance and regional inclusivity, with training centers established in Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Bolgatanga.

  • High Demand: Within just 48 hours of opening applications, over 90,000 individuals applied, highlighting the strong interest among Ghanaians in acquiring digital skills.

  • Strategic Partnerships: The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, as well as private sector partners like MTN Ghana.

Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George emphasized the program’s significance, stating, “This is a call to action to transform our economy, create sustainable jobs, and invest boldly in our people.”

The ‘One Million Coders’ initiative represents a pivotal step in Ghana’s journey toward a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy, empowering its youth to thrive in the digital age.
